I enjoy train travel, and like the notion of high-speed rail, but as much as I like it, it isn’t a good fit for the US. In Europe, all the major cities and most of the smaller ones have really good local public transit, so that going from the train station to one’s ultimate destination is fairly easy. In the US, there are maybe a half-dozen cities with local transit of comparable reach, and many of the places you ultimately need to go are out in the suburbs. So it isn’t really practical to go around without a car at… Read more »

I agree totally. My little seaside town of Santa Cruz has a portion of the population that wants to convert the 70 year old Southern Pacific freight tracks to commuter track from Santa Cruz to Watsonville. Some say to alleviate traffic, others say to promote tourism. Still others say not in my back yard! I say, it won’t alleviate traffic because most of the cars going from South Santa Cruz County are headed to silicon valley, so a train that stops in Santa Cruz is useless. I also say, tourists come from silicon valley and the bay area to play… Read more »

Gilroy Garlic Festival w/garlic ice cream! Loved it! California high-speed rail project (initially cost est. $33 billion) tripled to ~$106 billion! Project spent $14 billion & $7 billion is needed by 2026 to continue. Full route between the SF Bay & SoCal is expected to need > $100 billion! Nucking futz.

‘High speed Cornyafella’ = Nike running shoes. They may get you around the ‘track’ in a good time. Question is: Will they get you from LA to SF in a good time…
I would LMAO but did it cost me (I am in Michigan) any $$$$$ ?

Ok, as a Indigenous Californian*, a few words…. Bill, in January of 2020 you spoke in Carmel California. You and “Natasha” took Amtrak up to Salinas, got off and probably got a car ride to Carmel. Gilroy, is the next largest city to the north of Salinas, about a 30 to 90 minute Amtrak ride from Salinas…25 minutes by car. Steve, yes, you can take Caltrain up to SF and it’s so slow with so many stops, takes about 1.5 hours from Gilroy. I’ve taken it a few times. Slow. Great for commuters. But that’s about it. Steve, Gilroy Garlic… Read more »

Why the quotes around Natasha? From what I understand she really does exist, although I’ve ever actually seen her in real life

Stage name. She is quite real. I met her at Bill’s speaking engagement in Carmel in 2020. Seems very very nice.

When Bill mentioned to us on The Stratosphere Lounge one night that his wife had started a channel of digital relaxation music, he asked just those who were listening that night on TSL to go to her channel and like and subscribe. When he told us the name, we realized her name was Natalia Melinkova. Cool music, nice to relax to. https://youtu.be/14a_UI4cJsk?si=hQ34ULr2Hvmcvw1-

2.5-3 hours LA to Palmdale on a good day. Buses travel on the same roads as cars. They may have special lanes, that doesn’t count for a lot.
2.5-3 hours Gilroy to SFO via CALTRANS. BTW, you’ll smell Gilroy MILES before you’ll see it. Evan at 5,000 feet above. MMMMM that garlic!

2-3 hours milling about smartly waiting for a full train load to board; the same on the other end disembarking.

Yeah, par for the course for democrat “Hey, have I got a good deal for you!”

I actually like high speed rail in theory, but the way it gets implemented in the US is hit garbage.
We need more Dagny Taggart and Hank Reardon, less Cuffy Meigs
